Short description of the contract or purchase(s)
The scope of the contract is to design, manufacture, supply, test, deliver, install and commission subject to a performance specification a Double Multilayer Monochromator (DMM) for the DLS beamline B21. The DMM will require two flat, highly polished, multilayer-coated silicon substrates in order to select X-rays within a continuous range of energies 8-18 keV with a relative bandwidth on the order of 1 % and with high efficiency.

II.2)
Quantity or scope of the contract
II.2.1)
Total quantity or scope:
It is not necessarily expected that any single supplier will have all of the required expertise to manufacture and polish the substrates, apply the multi-layer coatings and manufacture the complete DMM system. It is therefore likely that the supplier will need to work closely with sub-contractors in order to deliver the complete DMM. Where the proposed design involves significant work to be undertaken by a sub-contractor, this should be stated clearly in the tender return along with the name of the sub-contractor.
The DMM will be placed inside a pre-existing beamline. Its total length along the beam direction can be no more than 1.11 m. The DMM will be housed immediately upstream from a focusing toroidal mirror (not in this tender).
DLS has its own standard electrical systems and hardware for motion control. It is, however, the responsibility of the supplier to provide all electrical hardware on the DMM itself, i.e. motors, encoders, limit-switches etc. These MUST be suitable for connection to the DLS control systems. Only where an unusual or highly specialised motion is specified (e.g. a piezo-adjustment) will the supplier need to provide additional local controls. The optic will be installed at DLS on a remotely controlled positioning system and operated under ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions. The DMM is to be UHV compatible.
We encourage the supplier to comment on any aspect of this specification and to identify possible modifications that could lead to either improved quality or reduced cost (without compromising the performance specification). If the required performance can be met or exceeded using alternative designs, technologies or materials, then these will not be excluded from consideration as long as sufficient information is supplied to justify the proposed solution. If some of the technical specifications cannot be met then this should be made clear. While it is strongly preferred that all technical specifications be achieved or exceeded, proposals that do not meet every technical specification will not necessarily be rejected.
Deliverables (Equipment).
One Double Multilayer Monochromator (DMM) to be installed at DLS, consisting of:
— Two (2) off polished substrates made from single crystal silicon.
— Ru/B4C or similar multi-layer coating (MLC) on polished surface of each substrate.
— Optic Mount for motorized rotation of both multilayer-coated substrates and for translation of the second multilayer-coated substrate along the incident X-ray beam.
— A UHV compatible system containing a vacuum vessel and dedicated pumping system to house the DMM Optic.
— Highly stable support structure for the DMM.
— Any control and monitoring electronics required to interface with the DLS control system.
— Motors, encoders, limit-switches, temperature-sensors, etc. — all wired to DLS-standard connectors.
— Installation and commissioning of the system at DLS.
— Sufficient spare parts with long delivery times to guarantee operation of the system with minimum down-time for a period of at least 2 years from the date of final acceptance.
— Training for DLS personnel in the operation of the DMM.
