The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) operate a major research facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire.
Within the site we operate, maintain and develop a spallation neutron source called ISIS to enable the scientific community to research the structure and interactions of materials to a sub-atomic level. There is an ongoing requirement to have in place radiological shielding in and around the scientific instruments and this predominantly takes the form of bulk steel placed around the instruments. This tender is for the purchase of steel to fulfil the near future requirements of ISIS. The requirement will be in the order of 1 500 to 3 000 tonnes of steel.
It is anticipated that suppliers will offer steel slabs produced using the continuous casting method without further finishing if tolerances are within acceptable limits.

Description of particular conditions: The government has set out the need for greater transparency across its operations to enable the public to hold public bodies and politicians to account. This includes commitments relating to public expenditure, intended to help achieve better value for money.
Suppliers and those organisations looking to bid for public sector contracts should be aware that if they are awarded a new government contract, the resulting contract will be published.
