II.2.4)
Description of the procurement:
The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy.

The Authority requires a cryogenic pumping system for a new Double Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system with a pumping speed in the region of 1500m3/s. The vacuum vessel to be pumped is approximately L3m x W2m x H3.5m in size. The pumping panels will be mounted inside the vessel on the two opposite walls which are 3 by 3.5m. The system must be ultra-high vacuum compatible.

Previous PINs have been issued which featured broader scopes of work covering the entire design process for the cryopump. Having recently re-evaluated the strategy for proceeding with this work package it has been decided to break the design process up into smaller, phased packages of work. The first phase will be an initial concept assessment phase. Having identified a number of potentially suitable existing NBI cryopump solutions an assessment of these concepts is required against a list of defined design criteria in order to rank these designs by their suitability for use within UKAEA’s application.

UKAEA believe that to perform a rigorous and fair assessment of the identified cryopump concepts the support of an SME or consultant that has experience of cryogenics and cryopump design and analysis is required. The consultant will work alongside the cryopump project team to provide expertise while assessing different cryopump designs in areas including:

— Measures of performance including pumping speed and heat load into the liquid helium circuit,

— Potential for the existing design to be scaled to available space envelope,

— Potential for the design to operate with the cryoplant services available for this application,

— Estimated time and cost for manufacture.

This assessment process will be used to rank the possible pump designs in order of suitability for use in the application. This ranking will allow for the selection of an appropriate design which will subsequently be taken forward and adapted to suit this application.

The following document provides further detail regarding the description of the requirement and can be accessed using the link provided below.

Double Beambox Cryopump Design Criteria

Interested parties should provide details of any prior experience of working in the following areas:

— The design, manufacture or operation of large scale cryopump systems,

— Using analytical modelling tools to evaluate the performance of cryopump systems,

— Design and operation of commercial cryoplant systems.

This information should be providede to the contact named at section 1.1 above.

The link below will take you to a registration system where you will be requested to enter your contact details. Once you have submitted these you will receive an email that contains a direct link to the Double Beambox Cryopump Design Criteria document.
