II.2.4)
Description of the procurement:
The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. One such fusion experiment is the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is which has recently undergone an extensive upgrade programme referred to as MAST Upgrade (MAST-U).

The MAST Upgrade Enhancements (MAST-U ENH) project will deliver additional enhancements that will further develop the capability of MAST-U. One of the new components central to achieving these enhancements is the Double Beam Box (DBB), a double neutral beam injection system that will deliver 5MW of neutral power from 2 beams.

Hypervapotrons are one of the main beam-facing components in the DBB and are used to accept beam power during commissioning and operation. They take the form of copper chromium zirconium plates with complex internal geometry designed to promote heat transfer and enhance the hypervapotron’s operational life. The maximum heat flux seen by the hypervapotron’s in operation can be as high as 15 MW/m2 and so tight control of the internal geometry is critical to their performance.

Analysis has been performed to define this internal geometry, however refinement is required to optimise the design to facilitate manufacturing processes. The final detailed design may be influenced by the response to this PIN.

The purpose of this notice is therefore to identify the capability and capacity of industry to manufacture hypervapotrons. All feedback will be used to inform the subsequent invitation to tender and ensure that the development of these components fully maximises the engineering capability of both UKAEA and the supplier.

The details of the project and manufacturing scope can be found in the technical information document, which also describes the current design of the hypervapotrons.

A separate sheet of market sounding questions are also provided to promote discussion. Any answers to these from external organisations will be used to help further refine our procurement strategy for this system.

The link below will take you to a registration system where you will be requested to enter your contact details. Once you have submitted these you will receive an email with a direct link to the documents identified above.
