II.2.4) Description of the procurement: The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. One such fusion experiment is the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is which has recently undergone an extensive upgrade programme referred to as MAST Upgrade (MAST-U).
The MAST Upgrade Enhancements (MAST-U ENH) project will deliver additional enhancements that will further develop the capability of MAST-U. 1 of the new components central to achieving these enhancements is the Double Beam Box (DBB), a double neutral beam injection system that will deliver 5MW of neutral power from 2 beams.
The Bend Magnet assemblies (one for each beamline) form a major component of the DBB acting to generate a magnetic field to separate the remnant ions in the beam before entering the Tokomak. Analysis has been performed to define this overall geometry, and design operational parameters, some refinement of which will take place during the project detailed design phase. The Authority requires assistance by provision of the following work scope:
— work in conjunction with UKAEA to complete the detailed design of the magnets,
— conduct structural analysis of the magnet coils (optional),
— provide manufacturing drawings,
— definition of manufacturing processes and procedures,
— manufacture of the magnet assemblies,
— testing and qualification of the magnets,
— inspection and cleaning to UHV standards.
The purpose of this notice is therefore to identify the capability and capacity of industry to realise this scope. All feedback will be used to inform the subsequent invitation to tender and ensure that the development of this component fully maximises the engineering capability of both UKAEA and the supplier.
The details of the current Bend Magnet design and required work scope can be found in a preliminary technical information document.
A separate sheet of market sounding questions are also included to promote discussion. Any answers to these from external organisations will be used to help further refine our procurement strategy for this system.
The link below will take you to a registration system where you will be requested to enter your contact details. Once you have submitted these you will receive an email with a direct link to the documents identified above.
