IPEN Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares
description:

IPEN is located at the Campus of São Paulo University in an area of nearly 500.000 square meters.
IPEN was created in 1956 with the main purpose of performing research and development of nuclear energy
peaceful applications.

The main facilities include the nuclear research reactor IEA-R1 which reached criticality in 1957, providing expertise and skills in reactor technology, and neutron physics, radiochemistry and radiation damage, producing radioisotope for use in medicine, industry and research. Presently, the IEA-R1 reactor is being upgrated to operate at 5 MW.

In addition, the Institute operates some other facilities such as: Zero Power Reator
IPEN/MB-01 (critical assembly); Pressurized thermal loop 70 bar; Cyclotron CV28 for radioisotope production; two electronbeam accelerators of 1,5 Mev for irradiation applications in the industry and engineering; pilot plants to carry out activities in the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium purification to hexafluoride conversion, and fabrication of nuclear fuel for research reactors; laboratories for chemical and isotope characterization for microstructural and mechanical tests. A 30 Mev cyclotron has been installed during 1998.
IPEN research centers are engaged in multidisciplinary areas. As an outcome of its expertise, IPEN is supplying the national medical community, on a regular bases, radiopharmaceuticals for therapy and diagnostic uses, which benefits early 1.200.000 patients per year. Research and technological development programs are also carried out in some other areas as:

# Nuclear physics:
nuclear reaction and structure;
electromagnetic hyperfine interactions.

# Neutron diffraction:
