II.2.4) Description of the procurement: The centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE) is a sub division of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority based in Culham, Oxfordshire, UK.
RACE is to develop and deliver a Hot Cell facility for the European Spallation Source (ESS) which is under construction in Lund, Sweden. The transfer system for use with this facility shall enable the import of equipment and the export of shielded radioactive components for road transport.
This market enquiry relates to a proposed waste transfer system used for transporting equipment and materials between 2 adjacent rooms at the facility. The loading of the transfer system shall be conducted using the facility’s cranes. No nuclear safety claims will be placed on the transfer system.
The waste transfer system will be a remotely controlled material transport trolley with a SWL of 95T running on a set of rails. The system shall be maintainable with a 50 year life.
Duties will include, but not limited to;
1) Remotely importing equipment/material from the Transport Hall to the Transfer Area;
2) Remotely exporting equipment/material from the Transfer Area to the Transport Hall;
3) Remotely completing low speed reversable motions over an 8 m distance;
4) Positioning within +/-5 mm at set locations.
This PIN has been published to enable market research to commence to assess the reaction of the market to the proposed requirement and review available technologies. The Authority will conduct a dialogue with the marketplace. This may result in a call for competition based on the content of the requirement achieved through the dialogue.
