University of Bristol - Bristol Earthquake and Engineering Laboratory Ltd.

BEELAB - Bristol Earthquake and Engineering Laboratory Ltd, has been established to market the expertise of the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC) at Bristol University and to promote collaboration between the University and Industry. Drawing on staff and equipment from the EERC and Department of Civil Engineering, BEELAB can offer the advanced technical skills and resources of a leading academic institution to solve complex problems in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. These have included the analysis of several major dams (e.g. the Victoria Dam in Sri Lanka), several major bridges (e.g. the 3km Straits of Messina suspension bridge), nuclear installations, hospital complexes and large chimneys. Seismic qualification tests on mechanical equipment can also be performed in the laboratory, whilst dynamic measurements(impact analysis and insitu monitoring) on full scale structures can be undertaken as part of integrity and safety assessments.
BEELAB can perform Seismic Qualification Testing to all relevant standards including the IEEE 344 and Bellcore specifications. The main test facility available is the 3m by 3m shaking table which can carry a payload of up to 15 tonnes. Eight actuators can accelerate the platform to over 4g simultaneously in the horizontal and vertical directions. The table has full, active control of all six degrees of freedom of motion to give the greatest flexibility and control over tests.
